What is Diaper Need?

'Diaper Need' refers to the lack of a sufficient diaper supply to keep a baby clean, dry, and healthy. It is a term commonly used to describe the situation families, (particularly those with limited financial resources), find themselves in, struggling to afford adequate diapers for their infants or toddlers. Diapers are a basic necessity for young children, and being without can have significant negative consequences on a child's comfort, health, and overall well-being.

"Diaper need is a growing problem in our country. A clean diaper means a happy baby, but according to new data from The NDBN Diaper Check 2023: Diaper Insecurity amoung U.S. Children and Families, 1 in 2 U.S. families cannot afford enough diapers to keep their infant or child clean, dry, and healthy... and 3 in 5 parents miss work or school because they can’t afford the diapers required to leave their baby in childcare. Clean diapers are a basic need of every baby and toddler."

Diaper Need can have various repercussions, including increased risk of diaper rash, urinary tract infections, and other health issues for the child. Additionally, parents or caregivers may face emotional distress and increased stress due to their inability to meet their child's essential needs. Diaper need can also impact a family's financial stability, as disposable diapers can be a significant expense, especially for low-income families.

Various organizations and initiatives recognize the importance of addressing diaper needs and work to provide diapers to families in need, either through donations, community programs, or partnerships with social service agencies. These efforts aim to alleviate the financial burden and ensure that all children can access clean and safe diapers, promoting their health and well-being.
